This one day introduction to map and compass is a practical hands-on day, showing you the skills to plan your own routes safely – be they local countryside trails, or in the hills and mountains.
This course It is aimed at people with no navigation experience, or those looking to refresh their skills learnt a while ago who want to get outdoors or back into the countryside, without relying on others, guidebooks or using easy well-defined routes.
What’s covered?
- Get to know the map: the symbols used on common walking maps, the interpretation of detail and an introduction to contour lines.
- Understand grid references.
- Introduction to using a compass.
- Orientating the map to the ground and using it to identify location and direction of travel.
- The use of timing in navigation.
- Using simple navigation strategies to plan and walk routes.
- Introduction to access rights and the Countryside Code.
